Overview of the CWI Part C Course Material

This online exam preparatory course will prepare you for the AWS CWI exam by covering Part C of your choice of endorsements. This course is designed for the API 1104 endorsement and provides all the content that you need to pass the exam.  See our other option for CWI.

Our CWI Part A, B, and C courses are AWS approved for 20 hours each and you can accumulate a total of 60 hours if you take all three parts. AWS accepts these hours for either re-testing purposes or as professional development hours towards a 9-year renewal.

The CWI Part C API 1104 course is designed to prepare you for the AWS exam by narrated using lessons, practice quizzes, audio flashcards, and timed practice exams. Part C – API 1104

As of January 2023, all three Part C choices are still open book exams at the Prometric Centers and you can take in your code book. AWS has a web posting stating that they are still evaluating the use of pdfs for the exam in 2023.

This Atlas course will cover the API 1104 material and is accepted by both the AWS and the API. For this Part C course, there are 13 lessons with 400 Q and A’s and three hours of Audio Flashcards.

This standard covers the gas and arc welding of butt, fillet, and socket welds in carbon and low-alloy steel piping used in the compression, pumping, and transmission of crude petroleum, petroleum products, fuel gases, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and, where applicable, covers welding on distribution systems. As well as covering procedures and acceptance standards for popular NDT methods.

The open book exam contains questions from every aspect of the code. They are arranged in no particular order, so navigation of the code is critical. In order to efficiently navigate the code, you must be able to determine which clause the answer is in simply by reading the question. The Table of Contents and Index should not be relied on as the main navigational tools but reserved as assistance. This may sound excessive, however if there’s one thing that will make the exam more manageable, it’s efficiently navigating the code.

Part C: API 1104

Objective: To acquaint the student with the Part C (Code-API 1104) portion of the AWS CWI exam.

Outline: 13 lessons and quizzes plus over 400 questions on the API 1104 built into interactive question banks and simulated/timed exams

The student's course progress is monitored through a Learning Management System (LMS) and the student is issued certificate of completion after finishing the required lessons. Students are not limited to a single viewing, they may repeat any lesson multiple times over a four month enrollment.

 ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

To qualify to earn the CWI credential, candidates must pass a vision test and have a combination of qualifying education and work experience, with supporting documentation.

RECERTIFICATION

A Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) needs to complete 80 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) of courses, seminars, or online courses to maintain their certification. These courses must meet the requirements of AWS Specification for the Certification of Welding Inspectors (AWS QC1:2016-AMD1) and cover subjects defined in the Education and Experience Requirements of AWS Specification for the Qualification of Welding Inspectors (AWS B5.1:2013-AMD1).

Add One Endorsement:

A CWI can pursue adding an endorsement to their certification. Successful completion (passing exam score) will meet the requirements for CWI recertification. A CWI can pursue the endorsement option up to (11) months prior to the current CWI certification expiration date. A CWI must choose one of the endorsements from the list below. Endorsements require passing an exam. The following courses are eligible for endorsement:

Important Note: AWS QC1:2016-AMD1 defines endorsement as an added skill in one's certification credentials. Pursuing an endorsement during 9-year recertification requires a different code book than the one used for current active CWI certification.

ENDORSEMENTS OR CERTIFICATIONS ACHIEVED PRIOR TO 9-YEAR RECERTIFICATION:

Endorsements: A CWI who has previously taken and passed one or more endorsement exams prior to the 9-year cycle may apply for recertification without having to meet further examination, professional development hour, or seminar requirements.

9-Year Recertification Course: As an alternative to the previous permitted options, a CWI can register and successfully complete the AWS 9-Year Recertification Course. The successful completion of the course meets the requirements for CWI recertification.
